Johnson Explains New Agent Hiring
Houston Texan WR Andre Johnson addressed the media Monday explaining why he changed agents. Johnson had been represented by his uncle, Andre Melton but felt more comfortable with high profile agent, Kennard McGuire. No relation to Jerry. When asked about his “contract dispute” Johnson relied, I’m not really worried about that right now. When the time comes for that, it’ll come.”
Sounds like Johnson is already getting some good advice from his agent and Andre’s attandance at team OTA’s is very encouraging. If the Texans are going to contend for the playoffs in 2010, Johnson must be on the field.
Mike Kerns of the dontmesswithtexans blog has a great interview with new Texan RB Ben Tate. It’s worth a read and you can view it here.
Former Detroit Lion QB Dan Orlovsky appears to ready to step into the role of backup quarterback for the Texans in 2010. The big framed quarterback (6’5″ 230 pounds) was signed to a 3 year 9 million dollar contract last March but was unable to unseat Rex Grossman as the #2 man last season. Given Matt Schaub’s penchant for injury, Orlovsky could see some action in 2010.

Another Johnson unhappy
First Chris Johnson was unhappy with his contract and now Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson is unhappy and skipping OTA’s. The news was reported this afternoon from John McClain via Twitter. Johnson must be upset that Brandon Marshall landed a huge contract with the Miami Dolphins after being traded from Denver.

Now Johnson is going to make 5.8 million this season, so don’t shed too many tears for him. Yes, Andre is a beast of a wide receiver. He’s recorded 216 receptions for 3144 yards and 17 scores the past two seasons. He averages nearly 100 yards per game in receiving yards. But the problem here with Andre is that he signed a 60 million dollar contract in 2007 worth at that time 8 years, 60 million dollars.
At what point in the NFL is a contract going to matter? In the regular business world if you sign a contract to do a specific job for a set amount of money, you just can’t expect the contract to be torn up and restructured if your business competitor signs a contract a year later for the same kind of work for more money. And the players gripe about the owners?
This is all posturing right now and Johnson’s absense on the practice field in May isn’t going to matter come September. Houston will most likely cave in and give Johnson a few more millions at some point, but really this is ridiculous.
Steve Slaton- “I’m 100%”
Houston Texans RB Steve Slaton conducted an interview with 610 AM’s Steve Slaton and declared himself 100% healthy after serious neck surgery in the offseason. Houston did draft RB Ben Tate as an insurance policy in case Slaton was unable to return. Even if Slaton is 100%, he has a ways to go to regain his rookie form with Houston.
Slaton suffered a major set back in 2009 with the Texans committing multiple turnovers, a benching and an eventual trip to the IR. It remains to be seen if Slaton will be a feature back again in Houston, but at least his health shouldn’t be a concern heading into training camp.
Houston Texans first signing
The Houston Texans have signed their first draft pick this afternoon according to a Johm McClain message on Twitter. The Texans signed KR Trindon Holliday.
The 6th round pick agreed to a 4 year 1.866 million dollar contract. The diminutive track star ran a 4.3 40 at the Combine and is expected to take over both kickoff and punt return duty.
